One of the largest commercial solar thermal systems in Hartford draws leaders to ribbon-cutting event

On Tuesday, March 6th, local community leaders as well as State and Federal representatives are invited to get a firsthand look at one of the largest commercial solar thermal installations in Hartford. This 60-panel system for a 78-unit apartment building on Laurel Street was designed and installed by C-TEC Solar, a Connecticut-based company located in Simsbury.

C-TEC Solar is co-hosting the event with the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA). “This is a great clean energy story,” remarked Bill Colonis, CEFIA Solar Thermal Project Manager. “With rebates made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the solar thermal installation at 270 Laurel Street will offset almost 70% of the property’s domestic hot water needs. This system will not only reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, but will further provide long-term cost stabilization.”

Solar energy use has increased by approximately 20 percent per year over the last 15 years* thanks to increased efficiency and falling prices. And it is beginning to attract attention — like that of prominent businessman Gene Rosenberg. He explains, “I want to help the environment. I see great potential in green energy alternatives. That’s why I invested in solar technology with C-TEC Solar.”

It costs about one-third less than a Photovoltaic (PV) electric system and uses around 65% less energy than traditional hot water heating systems. And, with Federal and State tax rebates and incentives, it can pay for itself in as little as three years.”
